Does a route come with a “protected territory”?
Yes, in most cases. Distribution companies set up routes 2 different ways. The route will either have protected accounts or protected territory.
A protected account route means you do not have a defined protected territory, but specific accounts are assigned to your route. Since the accounts are assigned to a route, another distributor is not allowed to offer services with the same product to that account.
A protected territory account means you do have a protected geographical territory. The boundaries of the territory are defined within the distribution agreement with the distribution company. As a distributor you have exclusive rights to distribute products within that geographical territory. This means other distributors cannot distribute the same products within your geographic territory.
Who provides route training?
In most cases the seller provides training to the buyer. The training period can be 1-4 weeks. As a buyer, it is important that you are able to have the knowledge to operate and succeed on your route. In some cases, the distribution company may also provide some on boarding training.
What kind of vehicle do I need to operate a route?
A box truck or cargo trailer can used to operate most routes. The size of the route truck and/or cargo trailer depend on the sale volume and size of the route
